The situation

A public top list is a simple product with one genuinely difficult problem: everyone listed on it has a direct incentive to cheat, and some of them are technical enough to try properly.

The leaderboard itself is an afternoon's work. Everything that makes it trustworthy is the actual product.

What we did

VoteRank ranks games, servers, communities and apps across categories, with rankings that move as votes land rather than on a nightly job.

The engineering weight sits in vote integrity — rate limiting, duplicate detection and the ordinary abuse patterns that appear the moment a list is worth appearing on. Getting that wrong does not produce an error; it produces a leaderboard nobody believes, which is a far harder failure to recover from.

Why it matters

Vote integrity is the same discipline as transaction integrity, which is where a lot of our platform work lives: assume the input is hostile, make the rules explicit, and design for the case where someone is actively trying to break them.
